MSW System Change Macro Intern

IHR’s CARF accredited treatment programs provide holistic interventions for hard to reach and high-risk individuals and families. Our mission is to develop a comprehensive continuum of care for individuals, youth, and families affected by alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, violence/trauma, mental health challenges, and other health issues.

Summary Statement

The Institute for Health and Recovery seeks committed first/second year Systems Change Macro Intern for Fall placement to work in two areas, with the Mass. FASD State Coordinator and the statewide tobacco /nicotine education and treatment integration project working in the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) programs.

Essential Functions

The Systems Change Macro Intern will assist the Mass. FASD State Coordinator and the Tobacco, Addictions, Policy, and Education (TAPE) Project with the following projects:

Mass. FASD Responsibility
  • Engage with state legislators to advocate for adapting the federal definition of developmental disabilities in MA.
  • Engage with families/individuals affected by an FASD to promote legislative goal
  • Reach out to parents/developmental disabilities/advocacy groups to engage them in systems change
  • Update massFAS FaceBook and massFAS.org pages
  • Learn about FASD and participate in trainings in various contexts
  • Participate in MA FASD Task Force
TAPE Responsibility
  • Learn about tobacco’s impact on people with substance use and mental health disorders, and effective strategies for addressing tobacco use in this population
  • Create a detailed literature review on several topics, including tobacco use’s impact on relapse to substance use
  • Create training curricula on issues such as tobacco and marijuana co-use and intervention/treatment strategies
  • Implement training curricula and review training outcomes from work with Tobacco Education Coordinators and BSAS providers

Systems Change Macro Intern must act in accordance with rules promulgated by the code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers and IHR.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • First year/second year student interested in macro public health or social work field.
  • Ability to work at the community and systems-level with families impacted by FASD
  • Interested in learning about the community and working with individuals and/or families from many cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Interested in working with substance use/ or trauma –related disorder program
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and take initiative
  • Must possess polished, mature communication skills
  • Strong work ethic, highly organized with a fine attention to detail
  • Willingness to submit to a background check
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age

Other Requirements (if applicable)

  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and regular access to a reliable vehicle;
  • Business Class Rider on Motor Vehicle Insurance, if transporting clients (within one month of start of job)
