Housing Coordinator

Summary Statement

The Housing Coordinator will access, collaborate, and advocate for people in the Access to Recovery (ATR) program who are struggling with substance use issues. The Housing Coordinator will be responsible for helping ATR participants, who do not have a stable housing situation, to seek a quality affordable and positive environment to call home, for a transitional period of time until they are more stabilized. They will help them select a sober home from a list of Mass. certified sober homes under the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH).

Sober homes are specifically designed to address the recovering person’s need for a safe and healthy living environment, while supplying the requisite recovery and peer supports. All are centered on peer support and a connection to services that promote recovery. They provide mutual support, emphasize independent living skills, and reinforce a substance-free lifestyle. They are independently owned and operated, and every home sets their own house rules.

Essential Functions

  • Visit Sober Homes to understand the types of services offered and the particular Sober Home’s operational procedures and requirements.
  • Meet with the Sober Home managers and make sure the property is high quality and the ATR participant will be comfortable living there.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the Sober Home managers and operators.
  • Keep abreast of Sober Home vacancies- and maintain a Sober Home list.
  • Outreach to substance use treatment providers who refer to ATR to inform of eligibility, referral process, and program expectations.
  • Manage referrals and have ongoing communication with referring providers.
  • Conduct initial interview with referred ATR participants to determine eligibility, develop housing plan and complete required data collection tools.
  • Provide assistance to ATR participants during all phases of the Sober Home search, including application process and interviewing process, possibly accompanying participants to their interviews with the Sober Homes, and following up on the status of the applications.
  • Collaborate with the ATR participant to develop client-centered housing plans that will give the person the best chance for obtaining lasting recovery. Ensure the optimal placement according to each individual’s needs, strengths, and challenges.
  • Ensure that the participant understands all the expectations and the specifications in the forms that they will have to sign, showing agreement.
  • Begin the discussions with the participants about how they will pay for Sober Home rent, once the ATR vouchers cease. Encourage participants to develop a savings plan (from WSB checks, salary, or income from SSDI) for when ATR vouchers cease. This activity will continue in earnest with the Recovery Coaches.
  • Perform basic calculations to determine weekly fees required as well as security deposits and develop budget with ATR participants.
  • After Sober Home placement, refer the ATR participant to the appropriate Recovery Coach and continue to communicate with that Recovery Coach about the transition.
  • Be in very close contact with the Recovery Coach counterpart at Gavin in order to keep abreast of participant’s status, make sure that the participant has stayed in contact with the Recovery Coach, and whether vouchers should be authorized for rental assistance for each week.
  • Maintain up-to-date client records including assessments, housing plans, progress notes, summary of interventions and issues. Maintain service notes, housing statistics, and track successful placements.
  • Keep up-to-date on electronic submission of client data and voucher authorization in the voucher management system.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled program, agency, collaborator meetings, supervision and training. This includes spending every Thursday at AHP in Sudbury to attend ATR team meetings.
  • Participate on advisory committee once per month (at most) in downtown Boston.
  • Attend trainings as identified by supervisor, including topics such as substance use/recovery, sober housing, and overdose prevention.
  • Communicate with IHR’s main office in Cambridge through use of shared online calendars, sign in–out board, time sheets, and check in/out with supervisor;
  • Attend team and agency staff meetings;
  • Regular attendance and punctuality is required

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BA degree, with two years human service, case management, coordination, and outreach experience.
  • Familiarity with Sober Homes and other housing services a plus.
  • Experience working with people in recovery and housing challenges, strongly preferred.
  • Passion for advocacy, outreach, and effective service delivery.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint preferred.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable ongoing vehicle and ability to travel throughout the state frequently.
